What is it about?

This study looks at how watching esports can make people play games more and spend more money on in-game purchases. We found that watching esports events, like the Mobile Legends M3 World Championship, gives viewers a sense of escape, lets them connect with friends, and provides fun social experiences. These things make people want to watch more esports, which then leads to them playing games more often. The more they play, the more likely they are to spend money on in-game purchases. By understanding what motivates people to watch, play, and spend, game developers and event organizers can create better experiences for esports fans.

Why is it important?

As the esports industry rapidly grows, understanding what drives people to watch, play, and spend money on games is crucial. This study helps game developers and event organizers learn how to keep players engaged by focusing on things like offering a fun escape, encouraging social connections, and providing entertaining experiences. By knowing what motivates players, companies can create better marketing strategies and game features that attract more players and increase revenue. This research also helps the esports industry in Indonesia and other emerging markets stay competitive by offering insights into what keeps audiences coming back for more.

Perspectives

We conducted this study in Indonesia, which is an exciting, emerging market for esports. Working together with my Master’s student, who has since graduated, we discovered that people watch esports not just for entertainment, but also to escape, connect with friends, and enjoy social experiences. This research is important because it helps game developers and event organizers understand how to keep players engaged and willing to spend money on in-game purchases. By tapping into these motivations—especially in a fast-growing market like Indonesia—companies can create experiences that resonate with the fans.
