What is it about?
In the past 50 years, sociological research on migration in Switzerland has grown a great deal. We witness the second major research programmes on migration in Switzerland: the NRP 39 Migration and Intercultural Relations and now the NCCR on the move. In this introduction to a special issue, we reflect on how sociological knowledge on migration is produced. We trace what type of research was produced by sociologists over the years, and wonder about the impact on politics and the public.

Why is it important?
The field of migration is rapidly growing in academic research, and there is a danger that we lose sight of the foundations. By looking backwards, we really mean to learn how to do better and more relevant research in the future.
