What is it about?

This study analyzes how Central European politicians use Facebook to talk about the European Green Deal (EGD). By examining 351 posts from 82 MEPs, it identifies four dominant "meta-narratives" that range from uncritical support to strict opposition, revealing a high degree of strategic similarity across different countries.

Why is it important?

The research introduces the concept of "polarized homogeneity," showing that while political stories across the region are becoming more similar in structure, they are designed to deepen divisions rather than foster dialogue. Understanding these narrative strategies is crucial for overcoming the emotional and political hurdles to effective climate policy.

Perspectives

This research is the effect of a project funded by the Polish National Science Centre. While it focused on broadening political science knowledge about environmental politics, it could also be used as a basis for weaving more persuasive stories on the European Green Deal as well as an encouragement to engage in dialogue with the narratives that oppose it.
