What is it about?

We have surveyed the transformations of tourism in the country in the past few decades and concluded that there is a rising, albeit ad-hoc focus on the notion of Iran and Iranian culture (as contested as this definition may be) under the Islamic Republic.

Why is it important?

We show the relationship between tourism, conceptions of nationhood and Iranian culture under the Islamic Republic. This suggests a tension within the state establishment which needs to acknowledge an Iranian culture that is broader than the otherwise ideological emphases on Islamic culture which the state has espoused for the past few decades. We also demonstrate the relationship between political change/instability and rise or fall of tourism in the Iranian context.

Perspectives

I think this is the first article that presented a systematic conceptualisation of Iranian efforts in tourism. the work with co-authors was efficient and a pleasure indeed. I could see that the country is still in its early days, mostly due to instabilities in domestic and international politics. I hope it can be of use to other researchers.
