What is it about?
We show that the common gene variant KCNJ11-E23K increases diabetes risk by reducing insulin secretion at threshold glucose levels. Pro-diabetic effects were magnified on a high fat diet. Our results help explain why and when some people are genetically more at risk of developing diabetes.
