What is it about?

Many patients with COVID-19disease have either diabetes or high glucose levels when admitted to hospital. We have evaluated the impact of diabetes and high glucose levels at admission to the hospital in people with no prior diagnosi of diabetes on mortality, need of mechanical ventilation and admission to Intensive Care Units.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that people with no known diagnosis of diabetes who have high glucose levels when admitted to the hospital because of COVID-19 disease have a greater risk of in-hospital mortality. Thus, glucose levels greater than 140 mg/dl at admission to the hospital should be considered a proof prognostic parameter that may require special attention and appropriate treatment

Perspectives

We hope we have provided another element for stratifying risk in subjects admitted to hospital because of COVID-19 disease. We also believe this finding calls for more collaboration among specialists at the time of severe conditions such the ones observed during the COVID-19 pandemic
