The records of costume at the Scottish court in the 1590s are extensive, but have rarely been explored. This article includes text referring to costume for masques. It seems likely that the masques took place at the weddings of courtiers.

Scholars including Sarah Carpenter, Jemma Field, and Maria Hayward have recently examined the records of the Scottish exchequer in this period (which are mostly unpublished) in order to understand the material and performance culture of the Scottish royal court.
