What is it about?

This first-person poem depicts a doctor grappling with fears that he may one day become afflicted by the same dreadful diseases that affect his patients. It describes the pain of having to deliver bad news to patients and families while maintaining an outwardly cheerful demeanor. The doctor cherishes the present moments of joy and connection with patients, even as he contemplates the unstoppable approach of death.

Why is it important?

This poetic work offers a profound window into the emotional toll faced by doctors, who must confront illness and mortality on a daily basis. Its timely themes of finding meaning and joy in the face of suffering will resonate widely.

Perspectives

As a molecular imaging physician, I wrote this poem to express both the privilege and pain of caring for the terminally ill. While medical skills and technology have limitations, human connection and living fully in the moment can provide comfort. This reminded me of the emotional rewards of my work, even during the hardest cases.
