Why is it important?
There is an epidemic of kidney disease worldwide but the pace of innovation in this space is moving at a glacial pace. Kidney disease has severe clinical consequences, impairs quality of life and places a large economic burden on the health care system. Transformative innovations have the potential to improve patients' lives while conserving precious resources.
Perspectives
I have spent over four decades trying to work closely with patients with kidney disease to ensure they are able to lead the high quality, productive, fulfilling lives they want and deserve. I have been frustrated by the slow pace of innovation in this field and hope this call to action will help accelerate work in this field.
