What is it about?
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) can be a deadly complication of multiple medical and surgical conditions. Early recognition and management can lead to much improved outcomes, but if healthcare providers are unaware of the problem, delays in recognition causes catastrophic complications and high mortality. This article describes the problem and lists the specific recommendations of the AKI!Now initiative of the American Society of Nephrology.

Why is it important?
This article emphasizes the indispensable actions that are needed in education, awareness and continued research to decrease the incidence and severity of AKI in all contexts. Given the current lack of specific treatments, AKI must be managed early on as the only way to decrease mortality and to promote organ function recovery.
Perspectives
The American Society of Nephrology, through the AKI!Now Initiative, educates and promotes appropriate management of AKI with specific recommendations, discussed in this article. The International Society of Nephrology is also engaged in a global initiative, the 0by25 project, which reflects those recommendations and applies them in multiple regions of the world.
