Stenting for renal artery stenosis

What is it about?

In the CORAL clinical trial of stenting versus optimal medical management for renal artery stenosis, revascularization provided no benefit on kidney function decline over time or clinical events for CKD or CVD. Patients managed medically did just as well as those who received stents irrespective of bilateral or unilateral disease or baseline kidney function.

Why is it important?

This study shows that optimal medical management of atherosclerotic risk factors is appropriate treatment for most patients with renal artery stenosis seen in clinical practice.
