What is it about?
We aimed to better understand environmental sustainability practices in dialysis units in Australia and New Zealand and where improvements could be made. We also wanted to help raise the profile of environmental sustainability within the kidney care community and individual dialysis facilities and to demonstrate the feasibility of broad surveying of environmental attitudes, knowledge and practice patterns. To do this, we conducted a survey of environmental sustainability practices of dialysis facilities in Australia and New Zealand.

Why is it important?
Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century and unfortunately healthcare is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Within healthcare, dialysis programs contribute disproportionately but despite this, and increasing awareness within the kidney care community, little data exists regarding environmental sustainability practices within dialysis facilities worldwide. In order to improve the environmental impact of dialysis globally we need data to better inform our decision making and practices.
