What is it about?

Corneal blindness is among the main causes of blindness around the world. The only treatment is the transplant, which faces the problem of donor scarcity. For this, research in this area is currently focused on tissue engineering and different sources of tissue for transplantation. This chapter states the knowledge state of the strategies for corneal endothelium cell generation from different types of stem cells.

Why is it important?

We present the advances made in the stem cell field towards the restoration of corneal clarity. Pointing out the potential of this strategies for the clinical application.

Perspectives

Writing this chapter was a great experience as it has co-authors from different fields including bioinformatic, ophthalmology, and biotechnology. Thus making an interdisciplinar context of this approaches.
