What is it about?

Adverse childhood experiences (ACE's) play a role in suicidal behaviors (i.e., self-injurious behaviors, suicide attempts, and suicidal ideation). As the number of ACEs increase, the likelihood of an adolescent experiencing suicidal thoughts or attempts, also increases.

Why is it important?

Research on the link between traumatic and/or adverse childhood experiences has shown that adolescent mental health regarding suicide and suicidal ideation can be impacted severely. Suicide in adolescents has been ranked second in leading causes of death in adolescents.

Perspectives

I believe that this topic is extremely important, as it solidifies the impact of ACEs on adolescents and their mental health. This publication adds to numerous others that have concluded similar results. Utilizing these publications will allow for early interventions for adolescents who have had an traumatic and/or adverse childhood experience, with the hopes of decreasing likelihood of engaging in self-injurious behaviors, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts.
