What is it about?
MspA from Mycobacterium smegmatis has become a viable tool for the design of nanobiosensors and bioelectronic devices. However, the classic production method of MspA is prohibitively expensive. Here, we present a cost-effective method of growing MspA in M. smegmatis, followed by extraction and purification.

Why is it important?
MspA is a homo-octameric protein that is funnel-shaped and ultrastable. This enables numerous applications in nanobiotechnology. The only setback - to date - is that MspA is prohibitively expensive. We were able to grow M. smegmatis in a much more inexpensive cell culture medium than previously used.
