This is a review related to how the chronic disturbance of calcium equilibrium can be related to epilepsy. It includes relevant information regarding two of the main calcium extrusion systems present in excitable cells; the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA) and the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX).
