What is it about?
A new design of topical buccal bilayer mucoadhesive, thin and flexible film contains sodium alginate and gellan gum loaded with low dose of 1 mg prednisolone sodium phosphate. In vivo study in rabbits showed that this film was able to promote aphthous ulcer healing with shorter treatment duration.

Why is it important?
The current marketed prednisolone sodium phosphate products for anti-inflammatory use are mainly oral, ophthalmic and parenteral preparations. Oral tablets dose should be given 5 to 60 mg per day in divided doses 1 to 4 times/day. However, when corticosteroids are regularly used long-term, the possibility of increased numbers of oral yeast infections and other side effects are very common. We developed a new type of buccal bilayer mucoadhesive film loaded with prednisolone in a dose equivalent to only one fifth of the oral dose.
