What is it about?
Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) help the patient's immune system to fight cancers. Unfortunately, this could also lead to immune adverse events (irAEs) against healthy organs, including the thyroid. The main clinical consequences could be tiredness, palpitations, weight loss up to more serious life-threatening forms. Since cancer patients undergoing immunotherapy can be particularly frail, it is important to anticipate and treat such endocrine and thyroid complications as early as possible.

Why is it important?
In addition to confirming the data already present in the literature, our work has demonstrated for the first time how the thyroid irAEs are also characterized by a reduction of the gland volume estimated by the neck ultrasound, which therefore can represent a new tool, common and accessible, for the early identification of these types of thyroid disease.
