What is it about?

Pain and inflammation can be quickly and safely treated with liniments applied to the skin. These liniments contain compounds called monoterpenoids that penetrate into the skin, stop pain, and evaporate from the skin. Stopping pain also stops inflammation since nerves in the skin that are involved in pain also release proteins that cause inflammation in the body.

Why is it important?

The world is in the midst of a crisis caused by the use of oral opioids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and acetaminophen. Thousands of people die from these drugs every year. Safer and more effective relief of pain and inflammation can be achieved with liniments applied to the skin.

Perspectives

Traditional medicines around the world provide useful liniments that can be used in the treatment of pain and inflammation.
