What is it about?
We provide a review about the recent advances in the field of mathematical modeling applied to nanomedicine. These models assist the understanding of the complex phenomena underlying the delivery of nano-therapeutics to the body. In particular, we report on computational models that address four main issues related to the use of nanocarriers in anti-cancer therapies, namely the delivery of nanoparticles, their uptake by cells, the release of drugs from nano-platforms and nanoparticle-based therapeutics. Mathematical modeling constitutes a valid tool to assist clinical studies, guide the rational design of nanoparticle formulations and identify optimal strategies for existing treatments.
