What is it about?

We present a case of Wernicke's encephalopathy in a 31 -year-old woman who, after 3 months from a mini-gastric bypass for severe obesity, presented a sudden and rapid decline in vision, leading to complete loss of vision, marked asthenia, and paresthesia in the four limbs; malabsorption syndromes are known chronic complications of bariatric surgeries and Wernicke's syndrome, in sporadic cases, is a potential complication related to them.

Why is it important?

Early recognition of atypical symptoms, including vision loss, and timely administration of therapy improves the prognosis of this potentially reversible but time-dependent neurological emergency.

Perspectives

I think that this abstract could be helpful to other clinicians to recognize also atypical symptoms of a Wernicke syndrome such as vision loss and that a timely administration of i.v therapy is essential for the B1 deficit in bariatric patients.
