What is it about?
Magnolia officinalis is a widely known Traditional Chinese Medicine that exhibited various pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and bioenergy generation. Previously, seven of its compounds were discovered to be electron shuttles, containing aromatic ortho- or para-dihydroxybenzenes. The presence of these structures has been linked to the plant's healing capabilities. In this study, we performed computer simulations to identify whether the seven compounds of M. officinalis could be drug candidates for Parkinson's disease.

Why is it important?
Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease affecting many people worldwide. There are still a lot of mysteries surrounding the disease, including its permanent cure. One solution that scientists have come up is by looking for compounds from traditional herbal medicines, which are a rich source of prospective drug candidates. In this study, we have validated that M. officinalis contain compounds that could possibly target Parkinson's disease-related proteins.
