What is it about?
Functionality and Efficient Services Delivery in Nigerian Hospitals describes the structure, personnel, and service delivery in every conceivable medical facility (from the simplest to the most complex) in Nigeria. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa; its high population and poor economy combine to pose a special challenge to the most essential and critical asset – good health. This book describes what happens in a selection of the available medical facilities in Nigeria – private hospitals, faith-based hospitals, and government hospitals. It brings an elucidation to the reader regarding the challenges that all healthcare practitioners face and the success they achieve. This easy-to-read book is not like the usual healthcare specialty books but provides useful information to every reader be they policy makers, healthcare personnel, patients, patients’ relatives, service providers to hospitals, or any other interested reader not listed.

Why is it important?
It is important that planners for the health sector fully understand the Nigerian healthcare terrain. The same applies to private, group, and corporate investors. It is even more imperative for managers of existing healthcare facilities to know how to operate the hospitals to the satisfaction of the proprietors, healthcare providers, patients, patients’ relatives, and the relevant communities. Young people whose dream is to study and eventually work in hospitals need to know the status of the physical structures, determinants of the functioning, and clientele of various types of hospitals in Nigeria; this knowledge will equip and prepare them comprehensively to address the challenges that the current government officials and direct service providers are facing. It is also essential for the readers to note from this book how other factors directly or indirectly affect functionality and efficient services delivery in Nigerian hospitals.
Perspectives
It was not easy for me to "gather" a group of individuals who are well-versed in the topics of each of the chapters of this book. Although I wrote much of the contents and edited the rest, this book with multiple authors stands out for its readability and comprehensiveness despite its conciseness. My perspective is that no reader will fail to read from the first to the last pages of the book.
