What is it about?

To reduce the consumption of freshwater in concrete construction, we have explored possibilities of use of seawater for making sustainable concrete. Use of fly ash and red mud as cement replacement is presented to control corrosion of steel bar in seawater mixed concrete.

Why is it important?

Water scarcity is amongst the biggest problems the world is facing in the 21st century. The concrete industry utilises large quantities of potable water in the concrete mixture itself, as well as for other processes such as washing out mixers and for curing concrete structures. Thus, to save freshwater, use of seawater, which accounts for 97.5% of Earth’s total water for making sustainable concrete seems imperative.

Perspectives

Conducting this was research was interesting for the authors. Utilising seawater and waste minerals for making concrete is required for more sustainable and economical construction practices.
