What is it about?
Epidemiolgic review and analysis of ferritin and percent transferrin measured during an iron reduction trial predicted diabetes and cardiovascular complications. Modified normal ranges for ferritin from 15ng/mol up to 80- 100ng/ml and percent transferrin saturation from 15 to up to about 25-55% were recommended.

Why is it important?
Diabetes as well as cardiovascular disease are associated with biderectional abnormalities of glucose and iron metabolism. Prior 'normal' levels of ferrtin of 15-320 ng/ml appear to be outside the range of normal biochemical biologic variables. This study demonstrated that tighter ranges of ferrritin and % transferrrin saturation were associated with more favorable predictive outcomes
