What is it about?

Nitrifying activated sludge (NAS) is kind of activated sludge with a high content of nitrifying bacteria, but its nitrification activity and enrichment rate are much lower than commercial nitrifying bacteria agents. We have established an effective method to enrich NAS in MBR to improve its number of bacterial nitrifiers and shorten enrichment time. Its effectiveness on bioaugmentation has also been confirmed at a high ammonia shock load.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the MBR system could efficiently enrich nitrifying bacteria using organic carbon containing culture medium, and potentially act as a side-stream reactor to enhance the nitrification function of the wastewater.

Perspectives

I hope that the enrichment method in this article can reduce the production cost of nitrifying bacteria agents, expand the application, reduce the ammonia nitrogen emission, and improve surface water quality.
