What is it about?
Shiozaki et al. (2020) showed that the differences in the atmospheric responses based on the winter climate in East Asia during the warm phase of the sea surface temperature in the equatorial eastern Pacific Ocean (El Niño). The deviations of sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean play an important role in the excitation of the atmospheric response, corresponding to the winter climate in the Far East. In this study, we investigated the atmospheric responses during La Niña based on Shiozaki et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.1175/JCLI-D-20-0246.1).

Why is it important?
El Niño/La Niña is well-known as one of the causes of abnormal weather over the world and has economic and social implications. Understanding where, how much, and how El Niño/La Niña influences the winter climate is not only of academic value, but it also helps reduce economic and social impact.
