What is it about?

Zirconia has been presented as an alternative for titanium implants in dental and medical field. However the bond of bone and zirconia surface has been a challenging issue. We designed a unique rough surface by laser that would enhance bony cells activation. This model would increase the bond of the zirconia implants to bone drastically.

Why is it important?

Our study is the first to show unique levels of roughness on the zirconia surface. This hierarchical roughness showed superior bony cells activation which results in bone increased bony cells differentiation and proliferation on this surface. This would eventually increase the bond strength of bone and zirconia implants.

Perspectives

This article is the result of a project out of many more in biomedical sciences at Weintraub Center in UCLA School of Dentistry under supervision of Dr. Ogawa. It is my honor to publish this article as a result of long standing collaborations with co-authors and the research team.
