What is it about?
Low concentrations of colistin in combination with other antimicrobials could be useful to treat infections due to multidrug resistantbacteria. We demonstrated that sub-inhibitory concentrations of colistin increase the activity of antimicrobials whose mechanisms of resistance are associated with efflux systems and/or decreased permeability.

Why is it important?
Our findings show that, by altering the permeability of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, colistin acts synergistically with a broad spectrum of antimicrobials. The mechanism of action involves modification of membrane fluidity as well as the direct partial inhibition of efflux pump function.
