What is it about?

The Danish National Patient Registry includes diagnoses codes for all hospitals contacts in Denmark. The Danish Stroke Registry is a nationwide clinical database with information on patients with acute stroke. We identified samples of patients recorded with diagnoses of intracerebral hemorrhage from each of the two registries and used discharge summaries and brain scan reports to verify diagnoses. For a subsample, we also evaluated the original brain scans.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that (a) the validity of intracerebral hemorrhage diagnoses in the two registries is high and support their use in research; and (b) brain scan reports and discharge summaries, are sufficient to correctly identify spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage as well as the location of the hemorrhage in the brain.

Perspectives

A lot of work still needs to be done in intracerebral hemorrhage to better understand causes and prognosis of this devastating disorder. I hope this article can stimulate further research in this area based on Danish registries.
