What is it about?

Different prediction models have been developed that can give individual dialysis patients a risk estimate for death. However, none of these models are used in everyday practice. Partly due to the fact that they have not been tested in different dialysis populations, so we are unsure on how accurate they are in predicting death. This article provides an overview of all existing models, and tests these models in the same group of Dutch dialysis patients.

Why is it important?

The manuscript shows that prediction models perform poorer in validation than the original papers suggest. The manuscript provides support for clinicians in choosing a model that is best suited for their patient population.

Perspectives

This publication contains an important clinical message, on how and which prediction model to use in patient consultations. Besides that it also has epidemiological value in serving as an example of a comprehensive validation study, of which many more are necessary in the medical field in order to combat research waste.
