What is it about?

Taking medication can get complicated as a result of many different instructions and formulations. There was no tool to help health professionals simplify medication regimens. We developed and tested such a tool. Testing showed it can help identify opportunities for simplification without changing the goal of the regimen.

Why is it important?

When people move into aged care, their complex medication regimens become not only a burden for themselves - they also become a burden for aged care staff giving the medications. Quality of life, time, and opportunity for leisure or clinical care activities may be compromised. Giving health professionals a tool will empower them to simplify medication regimens.

Perspectives

You might think doing things the simplest way would be obvious, but there remains a large scope for medication regimen simplification. A large proportion of residents who had their medications formally reviewed could still have their medication regimens simplified. With use of medicines increasing generally, and increasing as we age, this tool may help you in the future.
