What is it about?

This article is about the way in which Latin American presidents refer to their region. While some chiefs of state consider themselves in Latin America, others find themselves in South America or the Hemisphere, and others do not even talk about it very much. What explains these changes in discourse? Nicole and I problematize and try to explain this in this article.

Why is it important?

Because discourse is an important component of Latin American foreign policies and most of the academic work that is produces is based on such statements. This work clarifies that there is a huge gap between what politicians say and what the do, and sheds some light on how to analyze the political discourse.

Perspectives

I expect this work to inspire a new fiel of research in Latin America, devoted to the analysis of diplomatic discourse with modern techniques and sofware.
