What is it about?

Children in multilingual contexts learn in English at school but speak another language at home. Supporting home language use in English-medium education can improve children’s learning outcomes. This article provides simple classroom activities that teachers can use to explain multilingualism to parents and to show them practical ways to support learning at home using the language they know best.

Why is it important?

Everyday activities at home, such as conversations, storytelling, singing songs, and shared reading, play an important role in developing early literacy and school readiness. Though many parents want to support their children, they are unsure how to help. Teachers, therefore, have an important role in guiding families.

Perspectives

The activities in this paper grew out of classroom experience and discussions with both teachers and parents. My aim was to develop simple, practical strategies that teachers can use in their classrooms to strengthen the home–school partnership.
