Why is it important?

This study brings to light some characteristics that can suppose the origins of the contour lines in manuscript maps made almost three centuries before the concept of level curve was systematized by the topography of the XVIII century.

Perspectives

This article is the result of a more extensive research developed in my doctoral thesis in which I study the representation of the territory in Spanish America during the sixteenth century.
