What is it about?

The data from the expert interviews allowed for the analysis and systematization within the heritage site of the existing understanding of concepts like “culture”, “nation” “national cultural heritage”, “regional cultural heritage” and “European cultural heritage”. In the view of the experts, the most complex task is to define the concept “culture” – all-embracing and at the same time, very individual.

Why is it important?

Generally, culture is associated, firstly, with the activities of people and their results, which creates cultural heritage in the form of material and non-material values; secondly, uniqueness, oneness and authenticity were mentioned as indicators characteristic of culture. The experts were of the same opinion, that regional cultural heritage is Latvia’s treasure and has to be preserved in the regions which have historically developed (Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Latgale), the cultural characteristics of which are an inseparable part of Latvia’s national cultural heritage. At the same time, the experts pointed to a problem: since a unified nation has been in existence, the common cultural heritage tends to be considered more important, when compared to regional cultural heritage.

Perspectives

In their everyday work, museum employees provide a practical investment in the preservation and popularization of cultural heritage, but responses were not expansive and deeply considered on the question of the understanding of the concept.
