What is it about?
This article demonstrates that lateral meniscus root avulsions and lateral meniscus radial tears within 6 mm of the lateral meniscus attachment should be repaired. When a lateral meniscus root tear is created, there is a significant increase in joint loading and a decrease in joint contact. This relationship can be restored with meniscus root tears and meniscus radial tears being repaired at their anatomic positions

Why is it important?
This article is important because it demonstrates that when one does have a lateral meniscus root tear that there is a high risk of progression of osteoarthritis. In addition, it demonstrates that a transtibial suture pullout repair can restore normal joint contact forces, which will slow down the progression of osteoarthritis. Thus, when one finds a lateral meniscus root tear, they should be repaired in almost all patients.
