What is it about?
Lower back pain is such a common issue in both dogs and humans. This can be caused by a multitude of reasons and different parts of the vertebrae or spinal nerve roots could be impacted. Treatment for lower back pain or degenerative lumbosacral stenosis in dogs can be classed into 2 categories: surgical and non-surgical. This knowledge summary aims to collate existing evidence on the long term efficacy of surgical and non-surgical approaches in managing DLSS.

Why is it important?
DLSS is a debilitating disease which impacts on the ability of dogs to carry out daily activities such as walking and running and in severe cases can cause urinary and/or faecal incontinence. This deeply affects the quality of life of the dog as well as the strength of the human-animal bond.
