What is it about?

This study describes the epistemological beliefs of university students and analyzes differences in their beliefs due to the time of formation, sex and age. The results show that the beliefs of seniors are more sophisticated regarding the ability to learn, structure and certainty of knowledge, compared to freshmen. Differences were also found due to sex, but not due to age.

Why is it important?

The psychometric properties (construct validity and internal consistency) of Schommer Epistemological Questionnaire (1990) were estimated with a new sample of subjects. Results show that the reliability of the instrument is moderate (a = .653). This is the first time that a factorial analysis of Schommer's Epistemological Belief Questionnaire structures the five theoretical dimensions.

Perspectives

It is really interesting to have a validated scale to measure a complex construct as epistemological beliefs are. Now we have a Spanish translation of Schommer's questionnaire which has been revised, applied and analyzed.
