What is it about?

This editorial highlights how the Sudan Journal of Medical Sciences (SJMS) has persevered in publishing vital medical research despite the challenges caused by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The war has destroyed much of the country's health infrastructure and medical schools, yet SJMS continues to provide a platform for Sudanese health professionals to share their work, ensuring the availability of high-quality research through its open-access model.

Why is it important?

The research published in SJMS helps doctors and health professionals improve patient care, even in areas affected by war. It also ensures that crucial medical knowledge is preserved and shared globally. Despite the destruction of infrastructure and displacement of medical professionals, the journal’s readership grew significantly in 2023, reflecting the importance of accessible medical research during times of crisis. This demonstrates that science and education can continue to advance, even in the face of adversity.

Perspectives

As an editor of SJMS, I believe this resilience underscores the dedication of Sudanese medical professionals to contributing to the global body of knowledge. It also highlights the importance of collaboration, as our team—spread across different parts of the world—ensures the continued operation of the journal. I am proud that we can support the medical community in Sudan and beyond, making essential research available to improve health outcomes despite the challenging circumstances.
