What is it about?
In FY 2020, X University started to provide a compulsory subject for first-year students. This subject was initially designed to be provided in face-to-face lessons using active learning, dividing the students into small groups. However, the course was reorganized into non-face-to-face lessons following the declaration of a state of emergency by the Japanese government in response to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we compared the evaluations of face-to-face lessons provided in FY 2019 and non-face-to-face lessons provided in FYs 2020 and 2021 based on the students’ course evaluation questionnaires. The results indicated that face-to-face lessons were highly rated for the following three items: small-class education, interaction with other people who have different ideas, and group learning activities. The non-face-to-face lessons were highly rated for the following six items: student life, sense of belonging, expressing one’s opinions, listening closely, discipline, and in-depth understanding.
