What is it about?

This study reports the results of the adaptation of CODIP, a program that was first developed to address the social emotional needs of children whose parents are divorcing or have divorced. In this study we have adapted the six sessions of the program that do not address divorce especifically, so this new version of the program was called CODIP_R. CODIP_R is a brief preventive play-based program that applies in the classroom and helps young children to learn and identify their emotions and to solve problems constructively regardless of their family situation. The article informs about the content of the sessions and how children were evaluated pre and post- test. Participants were 83 Spanish young children (mean age = 6.18 years old).

Why is it important?

Results showed that participant children improved their emotional awareness (higher identification of positive and negative emotions, higher emotional self-awareness and higher competence to identify other children's emotional states) and their social competence (higher competence to suggest solutions to interpersonal problems, both their own and between others).

Perspectives

Education is more and more expected to address the whole child, and programs like this offer the professionals in education the opportunity to really accomplish this goal. This study shows that children respond very positively to interventions in which school routines are constructively altered and through which children are allowed to acquire new learnings about emotions, that means that they are learning about themselves as individuals and in relation to others.
