What is it about?

About 70% of Spanish young adults live with their families when they attend college. In this study, we compared first year University students in a Northwestern public University in Spain considering their family satisfaction, their family stress and the frequency and quality of their relationships with their parents taking into account several socio-demographic variables such as students' gender, living with family, having a partner or having divorced parents. Results showed that those students who moved from their family home had higher family stress. Students whose parents were divorced had higher family stress, lower family satisfaction and the quality of their relationships with either parent was also lower. Students' family satisfaction was negatively related to family stress and positively related to the quality of the relationships that they had with either parent.

Why is it important?

There are fewer studies about the role that family relationships play in University students and this study shows the relevance that family relationships have in a culture where most University students stay with their families while attending college. Also, it may point to the long-term effects that divorce may have on young adults.

Perspectives

This study offered me the opportunity to address variables related to students' family circumstances at the University where I work. So, University students were students and our research subjects. It also gave me the opportunity to reflect upon the possible long term impact that divorce may have on children and the need to address gaps such as exploring family conflict and emotional security in University students.
