What is it about?

We showed for the first time that long non-coding RNA Neat1 is heavily implicated in acute kidney injury (AKI) as revealed by 3 lines of evidence including (1) a human cross-sectional study (comparing patients with AKI in the hospital setting versus patients with normal kidney function being followed for other chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes in a primary care outpatients setting) and a longitudinal study (with Neat1 followed in patients who underwent kidney transplantation as one form of planned AKI); (2) three animal models of AKI which showed that deleting Neat1 protected animals from AKI; and (3) cell culture analyses to reveal the associated cellular mechanisms.
