Oral Sodium Bicarbonate and Bone Turnover in CKD: A Secondary Analysis of the BASE Pilot Trial

What is it about?

Treatment with alkali is hypothesized to improve bone health. We tested the effect of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on blood levels of bone health markers in patients with low kidney function. There was no significant effect on bone health markers except for blood levels of klotho, which is considered an anti-aging protein.
