What is it about?
Red mud is an industrial waste and its utilization is quite minimal because it tends to exhibit dispersive behavior. The study investigated the usefulness and effectiveness of biopolymers, namely guar gum and xanthan gum in mitigating the dispersion and preventing the dusting in the red mud waste. Results showed that XG is ineffective, while GG is an excellent stabilizer for avoiding the dispersion and dusting behaviour of RMW. The addition of 2% GG appears to be effective in successfully remediating dispersion phenomenon. Results further also demonstrate that the use of GG biopolymer does not alter mineralogical composition; rather it enhanced the bonding between the particles by gel formation.
