What is it about?

In reduced paddy field, the great amount of ferrous iron (Fe2+) tends to accumulate in soil solution. The content increased with the increase in rice straw. In the presence of rice straw, the growth was rice> E. oryzicola > E. crus-galli. The reason why E. oryzicola was dominant in paddy field is a strong Fe torelance of E. oryzicola.

Why is it important?

The torelance to Fe2+ toxicity is Rice > E. oryzicola > E. crus-galli. Based on this fact, we may be able to reduce the Echinochloa weed.

Perspectives

Under the condition of organic agriculture, farmers have to remove weeds without herbicides. Our results show the possibility of weeding by utilizimg soil properties. Ferrous iron can be one of theem.
