What is it about?

In this paper a selection of PA methods for characterization of polymers is presented. The UV-VIS Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (PAS) and Phase Resolved PAS, the Two-Beam Phase-Lag and also the so-called Open Photoacoustic Cell (OPC) will be described The theoretical basis and experimental results together with the perspectives of future studies in this area will also be discussed.

Why is it important?

In the polymer area, there are several kinds of non homogeneous samples that present high level of scattering light and also samples that are opaque in a considerable part of the spectrum. Due to that, photothermal method is recognized to be an important experimental procedure to access the thermo-optical properties of polymeric materials.

Perspectives

PAS have been shown to be a very useful optical technique for studying optical and thermal properties of polymers.
