What is it about?
Co-opetition is a relationship strategy between firms or institutions that compete and cooperate simultaneously, but in different areas. This is shown in several inter-organizational arrangements. Thus, the aim of this article is to establish theoretical propositions aboutanalyze the development of coopetition strategies through abased on Consortium of Community Universities in the South of Brazil (Comung), comprehending 15 higher education institutions (HEI), located in the South of Brazil. It is an investigation of a single case with multiple analysis units, conducted through in loco interviews with the President of the Consortium and the managers of the HEIs, along with secondary data.

Results show that co-opetition has been used as a mechanism for market protection and access to unavailable resources individually, following the dynamic interactions between the HEIs comprehending the Comung.
