How do business networks develop over time and what factors explain its development? In this article we propose a life-cycle of business networks composed by six stages: Birth, Formalization, Development, Consolidation, Decline, and Dissolution.

Network managers may benefit from our model to diagnose the development of its network and define strategies for consolidation. Scholars may use the life-cycle model to analyze the development path of business networks and its implications for business performance.
